Welcome to the North Wales Clarinet Choir

2001 has been an eventful year. Highlights include our concert with József Balogh (virtuoso clarinettist from Hungary), a memorable rehearsal the day after and of course the masterclasses that followed. Then came our very successful appearance in the North Wales Conference Centre at the much-enjoyed 2nd British Clarinet Choir Convention hosted by the North Wales Clarinet Choir team. It is the second time we have hosted a national clarinet event in North Wales. Then followed a wonderful tour of Italy, visits to Venice, Verona, Bologna, concerts, good food and friendship. Equally fun was the tour of the Italians in North Wales with many of our members declaring a holiday from school or work.

The North Wales Clarinet Choir was founded in November 1995. Concerts have been given regularly throughout North Wales including competing at the Royal National Eisteddfod at Bala in 1997. For this event preparations and the performance were broadcast by HTV in a programme entitled A Visit to the Eisteddfod.

The choir travelled to London to attend the first British Clarinet Congress in November 1997 at the Royal College of Music. They were guests of the Broby Music School in Denmark for nine days in August 1996. Six concerts were given at various venues, e.g. Legoland, Faborg Kirke, Amfi-scene in Odense, Egeskov Slot castle. Visits were made to the Carl Nielsen museum, Hans Christian Andersen museum, Johannes Larsen art gallery and they walked the peninsular of north-east Funen. The Broby Choir were their guests in July 1997, and together played eight concerts in four days, did some sightseeing and climbed Snowdon!

A trip to the Netherlands took place in the summer of 1998 to join the Capriccio Clarinet Choir and both choirs traveled together to Broby in Denmark for a weekend with the Danish Choir. The NWCC enjoyed a tour of Hungary 2000, playing in Budapest, by Lake Balaton and the Danube Curver. The tour was organised by József’s wife Beatrix, and included sightseeing in Budapest, sailing on Lake Balaton, a visit to thermal baths, wonderful food and lots of traditional music.

May 1999 saw the North Wales Clarinet Choir together with the Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain, host the first Clarinet Choir Convention. It was held in Conwy. Gordon Lewin composed a piece for clarinet choir based on Welsh traditional music entitled Grass Roots for the occasion, and the team of tutors included John de Beer, Richard Edwards, Angela Fussell, Charles Hine, Peder Riis-Jensen, Basil Tschaikov and Alan Andrews. Also in 1999 the choir was host to the Capriccio Clarinet Choir, they played together at concerts around North Wales.

There is also an Adults septet comprising of older members of NWCC.

The choir is going to be touring Hungary in july/August 2003, more details to come later.
